Switzerland Quick Guide

See Scenic Switzerland

Our Switzerland Travel Tips quick guide goes over a few basic "nice-to-know" tidbits about tipping, language and currency.

Planning a trip to Switzerland? Get ready for stunning alpine scenery, wandering through historic cities, and breathing in some of the cleanest and freshest air. Highlights including the Matterhorn (Zermatt), Lake Geneva, Lucerne, and Bern, all accessible via their excellent train system.

Switzerland is ideal for a 7-10 day trip focusing on nature and culture. During the spring, take in the blooming wildflowers, in the autumn participate in harvest, or strap on your skis and hit the fantastic slops during the winter. Plan for hiking, scenic train rides (Bernina Express), exploring UNESCO sites like Bern's Old Town, and enjoying Swiss chocolate and cheese.

Currency

The official currency of Switerland is the Swiss franc ₣ (CHF).
BANKNOTES: ₣ 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 1,000
COINS: ₣ 5, 2, 1, 1/2 franc, 20, 10, and 5 centime

It's important to note that US currencies are not accepted at most Swiss establishments.

Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but you may need cash for
smaller purchases, especially in rural areas, mountain huts, or small
village shops.

Language

There are four national languages of Switzerland: German, French, Italian, and Romansh. German is the most common, followed by French, but many speak a variation “Swiss German," which differ by location.
